Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Thanksgiving is one of our family's favorite holidays... I am so thankful for my family, friends, my home, my blog buddies and everything good in my life.

My sister hosts Thanksgiving each year, so I cook and bake my usual potato leek soup, bread pudding, candied yams and brussels sprouts and bring it down to her in New Jersey.  She really goes all out cooking array of dishes, baking pies, cakes and of course, the big birdie.  My brother-in-law is the one in charge of ensuring that the turkey is baked to perfection... I must say, it is always perfect and never dry.  I know we'll be eating till our buttons pop out!  No worries, we'll just burn it off shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

How to make a tab top curtain (DIY)

Surprisingly, tab top curtains are not so difficult to make.  I made eight panels for my One Room Challenge back in May.  Saved lots of moolah doing it myself.

Each panel is 96" long, I wanted them from ceiling to floor to give height to the room.  

I cut 104" length of fabric for each panel and sewed  1/2" hem on each side of the panel.  I did a 4" hem on the top and a 4" hem for the bottom.

I have seen other curtains made with ribbon for the tabs, I wanted the same fabric for the tabs.  So, I cut 3" strip of fabric and sewed it into a long tube. Then ironed the tube flat and cut into 4 1/4" strips.

I sewed the tabs about 6" apart starting from the end to give it a nice pleat.  You can space it out according to the pleat you prefer and the width of the fabric.

And here it is hanging up in my new master bedroom...

I am thrilled with the way they came out.  The most difficult part of this project was cutting the fabric panel at an even length.

Birthday celebration and a Dresser Update

Happy Monday everyone!  Hope everyone had a great weekend!  This weekend we celebrated my son's 30th Birthday with family and closest of friends and we had such a nice time.  Happy Birthday Christopher, where does the time go?

Now, off to a little switcheroo on my daughter's dresser.  My daughter's dresser is about 12 years old and has a little wear and tear especially on the drawer pulls, they were breaking off into pieces.


 While I was meandering through one of my favorite stores, Homegoods a while back, I found these flower knobs for her dresser from Cynthia Rowley,  it matched the roses on the dresser perfectly.

The knobs looks like it was made especially for this dresser! Great find!

Black is beautiful!

I'll be honest with you, I would've never considered painting any of my walls black in my house until I saw the master bedroom done by The Design Daredevil during the One Room Challenge at Calling it Home.
I love the dramatic effect that the black walls gives to the room.  The deep color provides such a great presence to all the lighter objects in the room.

How to remove ink stain on clothing

Hi there! I am so happy to share with you my little discovery, I'm sure most of you already know this little tidbit but, this is new to me (I get very excited about things like this!).  The other day,  I saved my shirt from going into the garbage because of yet another ink stain.  I really like this top so I tried washing it few times with different cleaners but I had no success.  I was finally giving up, the shirt was washed and dried in the dryer so many times I figured the ink stain is really set in.  Then, I came across this this solution...

As soon as I sprayed the hairspray on my shirt which was a blend of polyester,  the ink started to disappear.  I then gently rubbed the hand sanitizer and the soap on the shirt and in an instant the ink was completely gone!  Although, it would have worked totally with just hair spray and hand sanitizer.

Look at this! As it was never there!

Then, I figured how about a different kind of fabric, like cotton, would the stain get out that easily? I took one of my knock around shirt (doesn't everyone have one of those)? This time deliberately wrote on the shirt, okay went a little crazy... At first, I sprayed the stain with the hairspray and the spray broke down the stain and spread it out.  Then, I put the hand sanitizer on it and it took out I would say half of the stain, but not completely.  Lastly, I rubbed the shirt with the Dawn dishwashing liquid and instantly all of the stain came out.  For the cotton, it needed all three ingredients to get rid of this tough ink stain and for the polyester, you could just use the hairspray and hand sanitizer.

Fantastic, right?

To think, how many shirts could I have saved!

P.S. I heard rubbing alcohol works well too, but I haven't tested it out.

Transition to a Teen Bedroom

Hi there! I am about to embark on another headboard project, this time for my daughter's room.  It all started because I received a text from my friend who makes commercials and needed pictures of my daughter's room and the first floor living space in my house to see if they could use it in a future commercials.  No problem! I took some pictures right away and sent it off.   Anyway, when I saw the pictures of my daughter's room,  the room appeared so empty without a headboard.  I really have to finish off her room. I had planned to make the headboard and had even posted about it here over a year ago.    No more procrastinating, here is my daughter's room now... Isn't it screaming out for a headboard?

Here are the jewels I had purchased awhile ago for the headboard.

This is a mural I painted for my daughter a few years ago, I am hoping that she won't grow out of it for awhile!

Now, only if we can decide on a color for the headboard!  Should we go with a bold color, pastel colors or off white?  I am not sure,  I would love your input!
