Roadside rescue!

Check out this cute little table my husband had picked up on the side of the road over a year ago.  It needed so much repair I was not sure what to do with it so I just tucked it away and didn't deal with it.  It was missing the top, the joints were separated and the fret work was coming off... but I loved the carvings on it and the uniqueness of it.

After so many scenarios of how it should look like,  I finally came up with a plan to stain the table a dark espresso color and make a mirrored table top.

I filled the gaps with wood putty and sanded it down.

Then I cut a round piece of wood for the table top and I found a 12" round mirror from my local craft supply store.

Well, that is as far as I have gotten with this project.  I hope you come back to see the how it all comes together!

What do you think of my plan?  Should I choose a different color to stain the wood?  I would love some input.

Have a great day!

After Hurricane Sandy repair- Phase 1

As most of you know when Hurricane Sandy hit New York, New Jersey 5 months ago, it turned our lives upside down, inside out.  Our homes were uprooted, smashed and drowned to put in mild terms.  Since that fateful day, people have been trying tirelessly to repair the damages their homes have sustained.  There is a somber feeling in our beautiful beach community,  I am hoping that coming of Spring will bring some good spirits.  My family and I are still out of our house and eagerly waiting to return.  Unfortunately, it is going to be a long time before we go back home, there was structural damage which caused a domino effect in repairs.  Nevertheless, at the end of the day, we'll have a very strong house.

We are at phase 1 of the renovation… This entailed repairing all the structural damages inside and out.

It is all very surreal to be looking out of your house without a wall separating you from the inside and the outside!

I hope you stay tuned for the upcoming phases of my renovations!

Have a great weekend!

Beautiful kitchen renovation

Just let me start of by saying, I am a slacker!  My posts have beeen so far and few in between, I feel as though I just don't have the time and the topics to post about.  Does this happen to anyone else? Well, I have a few projects lined up, so hope to complete them soon and show you the results.  In the meanwhile, last year my friend move into my neck of the woods… She bought a house that was the perfect size and locations for her and her family, but needed a complete renovation.  My husband, the contractor did the renovation and my sister designed the kitchen, it turned out to be a family affair.  The renovation is complete now, a the house looks amazing!

Here is the kitchen before with dark and dingy cabinets, 70's linoleum flooring.

Took out all the old from floor to ceiling and reconfigured the space to make it larger and more functional.

Created access to a future deck outside of the kitchen.  Radiant flooring were installed underneath beautiful gray tiles to keep the toes nice and toasty in the cold days.

Cabinets, granite, backsplash and appliances installed, almost there!  Every inch of space was used to create plenty of  cabintetry.

Here it is now, bright, beautiful and updated!

I love the punch of turquoise color on the walls!

Can you believe this is that old, dark and dingy kitchen?  I think it turned out stunning!

Tufted headboard

I am so excited, this past weekend I ordered an antique french provincial headboard from Criagslist for my daughter.  This was my first Craigslist purchase and I was a little reluctant, but I did it anyway.  I ordered the headboard and the foootboard for $120.00 and I'll have to go pick it up in a few days.  Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping all goes well!

I have a very ambitious plans for this headboard… I plan to paint it and tuft it in maybe a white velvet with crystal buttons… Doesn't that sound dreamy?  That plan can change a hundred times before I even get the headboard.  I know it's not going to be easy, my last tufted upholstery project, tufted ottoman, was so long ago and it was long ago was because it was quite a difficult project.  But, I have been looking forward to doing  this in my daughter's bedroom for a few years now.  I have been searching for the perfect headboard for this project for along time…I would have liked to have found a bit more ornate headboard, but the one I purchased will do.

Here is the one I purchased…

I am thinking of using this ivory velvet fabric for tufting and painting the wood trim white,  execpt I am wondering how the white going to hold up in a child's room, especially mine!

Here are to jewels I like to use…

I am would love to tufted it like this…

Aren't they gorgeous?  I can't wait to get the headboard… in the meanwhile, I have to get all the supplies together.  I think this will be a fun project, a bit back breaking, but in the end I hope it will look nice.

Have a great day!

Beach chic decor

It has been really cold here in New York and I just cannot wait for some warm weather to arrive.  Meanwhile, I figured I would ponder over some beautiful beach decor to make me feel a bit warm!

D.I.Y. Pallet wall

My friend Kristin has become a major contributor to my blog with her unique DIY projects and showcasing her beautiful home decor, if you missed it you can see it here and here.   Kristin and her husband recently began their mission to makeover their basement.  One of the projects that they were going to tackle is a pallet wall and a pallets surrounding their bar area (bar area is not yet complete, I'll show you at a later date along with finished basement).

Here is the way the pallet wall turned out… Isn't it cool!

Kristin's husband had the grueling task of finding pallets during his walks in the area, lugging them home one by one and cleaning them with bleach (I'm sure he wasn't a very happy camper!)  It is all for the greater good, he was able to recycle these pallets instead of them going in the garbage.  He managed to round up about 30 of them. After they were cleaned and slightly sanded, he cut off the nails keeping the nail heads showing, which looked great!

The wall they were adhering to was a concrete wall, so first they glued on a piece of plywood and anchored it to the wall.

They staggered the planks on the floor to get an idea of how it was going to look when it was up on the wall.  Then cut the end pieces with a chop saw, this would be the best tool for this job it will give nice straight cuts.

Kristin and her husband said it is a bit of hard work preparing the wood, then after that the installation is quite easy.  I think this wall turned out fabulous! Great job to the dynamic duo!
